Jean Silva: Can "Lord" solidify himself as the next title challenger at featherweight?

Regarded by many as a champion in waiting at 145 pounds, Jean Silva (17-3) returns following a decision victory over Arnold Allen in his last appearance, his first fight to go the distance with the promotion. 6-1 under the UFC banner with five finishes after earning a contract against super prospect, Kevin Vallejos, on the Contender Series, Silva’s only UFC loss has come against two-time title challenger, Diego Lopes, succumbing to a second round TKO at the last UFC Noche event. A heavy-handed KO artist with an underrated grappling game in his back pocket, “Lord” is a marauder, barking and showboating as he marches forward relentlessly. 

Jose Delgado: The young prospect looking to kickstart his UFC career in earnest

Stepping in for Yair Rodriguez after “El Pantera” withdrew from a high profile matchup what seems like the umpteenth time, Jose Miguel Delgado (12-2) finds himself in the biggest fight of his career with an opportunity to launch his name into title conversation. The American is 4-1 with two nasty stoppages in the promotion, with many arguing that his sole loss against Nathaniel Wood should have scored in his favour. A long, rangy kickboxer with devastating power and high output, the 28 year old MMA Lab representative has finished all but two of his pro wins and has never been stopped.

Despite Silva closing as a big favorite, I believe that Delgado is actually an extremely live dog here.

The MMA Lab prospect has a significant edge in height and reach, hits like a truck, and should arguably be unbeaten in the UFC considering that he looked like he was robbed of a victory against Nathaniel Wood. The American has also higher output than Silva and the last time “Lord” faced a similarly sized opponent, he ran face first into a spinning elbow from Diego Lopes.

However, I’m reluctantly leaning towards Silva here. The deciding factor is the Brazilian’s last win over Arnold Allen, a fight that proved that he can overcome adversity and earn victories over the elite of the division at featherweight even when he’s unable to score a brutal finish; something that Delgado has yet to do. It doesn’t hurt that “Lord” has devastating power, relentless pressure, and arguably is the better grappler in this match up.

I maintain that Delgado is excellent value as an underdog here; I can definitely envision a reality where Silva gets reckless and charges into something fight ending in a similar manner to his last Noche headliner, potentially one of Delgado’s devastating knees. With that being said, I think that Silva’s experience and power is ultimately going to see him to victory here, whether that be by late rounds finish or a hard fought decision.
