Tommy Paul advanced to the semi-finals with a straight sets win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Paul had beaten Ethcheverry just over a week ago in Miami and this was another comfortable win for the American, who wasn’t broken on serve as he wrapped up a 6-4 6-2 win after one hour and 36 minutes.
He now faces Tiafoe, who is just one match away from a fourth consecutive final appearance in Houston following a hard-fought victory over Alexei Popyrin. The match went all the way to a deciding set tiebreak, with Tiafoe saving a match point and winning the last three points in total to claim a 3-6 6-4 7-6 (6) win.
Paul leads the ATP head-to-head 3-1 and has won the last three meetings, but this will be their first on a clay court. Tiafoe has a brilliant record at this event and is certainly worth a set here.
