Paul saved seven match points as he defeated Etcheverry for a third time this season, winning 6-7 (5) 7-6 (5) 7-6 (7). The American is searching for his second title of the season on clay, following success in Houston.
He will now face Daniel Altmaier as he pulled off an upset by beating second seed Ben Shelton. The 23-year-old served for the match in the second set, but Altmaier survived to win 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-4. He is now into his third quarter-final at this tournament. The German struggled at the start of this season, as he went on a losing run, but this was his highlight of the year so far.
Paul’s round-of-16 match was split over two days, and Altmaier should be the fresher of the two players. He is a threat on clay, his best surface, and this will be another tough match for Paul.
