Tommy Paul registered his first victory at the third time of asking against Tomas Machac to reach the fourth round of the Italian Open. The American was broken when serving for the match in the second set, losing the subsequent tiebreak, but ended up forcing a late break in the decider when Machac was serving to stay in the match.
Paul, who made the semi-finals here last year, now takes on Alex de Minaur for a place in the last eight. De Minaur defeated Hugo Dellien 6-4 6-4 and has become the only player to reach the last-16 of every Masters 1000 so far this season.
De Minaur leads the head-to-head 5-0 and 1-0 on clay. Their only match on the surface was three years at this event in the third-round, while they last played each other in the quarter-finals of Los Cabos two years ago with De Minaur coming from a set down to win.
