Tomas Martin Etcheverry overcame Grigor Dimitrov in the first-round of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Dimitrov has reached the semi-final of this event on two previous occasions, and he controlled the second set to level the match. Nevertheless, Etcheverry crucially broke in the sixth game of the decider and held on to win 6-4 2-6 6-3.
He now takes on Terence Atmane in the second-round. The Frenchman beat Ethan Quinn in straight sets. Quinn only entered the main draw as a lucky loser and he was under pressure from the start, as Atmane won five games in a row to seal the first set in style. The second went on serve, until Atmane broke again and served it out to win 6-1 6-4.
That was a dominant victory for the world number 45, and he has seemingly found form, having reached the round-of-16 in Miami last month. Nevertheless, Etcheverry has already won a title on the surface this year, following his success in Rio, and he has 11 wins and just two defeats on clay in 2026 so far.
