Tomas Martin Etcheverry last competed in Madrid, winning his opening two matches against Sebastian Ofner and Dino Prizmic before a straight sets loss to Arthur Fils. Etcheverry has picked up a number of wins during this European clay court season, but he is yet to make a key breakthrough. He was competitive against Carlos Alcaraz in Monte-Carlo earlier last month, taking the match into a deciding set. Etcheverry won the Rio Open earlier this year.
He faces Mattia Bellucci in round two after receiving a bye. Bellucci was impressive on his way to defeating Roman Andres Burruchaga in his first-round match. He was broken on just the one occasion as he wrapped up a 6-4 6-4 win after one hour and 54 minutes.
Etcheverry is the favourite for this one, but Bellucci can be a dangerous player at times, and this should be a good test for the Argentine as he attempts to put together a deep run in Rome.
