Mariano Navone backed up his famous win over Novak Djokovic by sending Matteo Berrettini packing in New York.

The Argentine beat the Italian in four to set up a meeting with his compatriot, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who scrapped hard to fend off Britain’s Jacob Fearnley.

This will be their first tussle on tour, although 27th seed Etcheverry did win two lower tier encounters on clay in very routine fashion in 2019 and 2022 respectively.

However, Navone is having the best season of his life in terms of main tour match wins and this should be much more competitive. 

Etcheverry is 17 places better off on the ATP ladder and has a better hardcourt record, so he’s a good shout despite Navone’s win over Nole. It just may take more than three stanzas to decide it.
