Tomas Martin Etcheverry overcame a poor start to beat Federico Agustin Gomez and make it through to the next round of the US Men’s Clay Court Championship. Etcheverry struggled in the first set but regrouped well and didn’t face a break point on serve in the next two sets as he won 1-6 6-1 6-4. He has already won a title on clay in Rio earlier this year, and he has won nine of his 10 matches on the surface in 2026.
Alex Bolt is his next opponent. The qualifier produced a fine display to beat Yibing Wu in straight sets. Bolt was 5-3 down in the first set but broke back as Wu serving for it. He then produced a brilliant comeback in the tiebreak, winning four points in a row as he saved two set points and went in front. That proved to be crucial as he broke twice in the second to win 7-6 (6) 6-2.
That was a fine win for Bolt, but Etcheverry is likely to be a step up in terms of quality.
