Tomas Machac defeated Stefanos Tsistsipas for the second time this year to book his place in round two of the Italian Open. The Czech was broken when serving for the match in the second set, but he still pulled clear in the tiebreak to seal a 6-4 7-6 (4) victory. Machac had already beaten Tsitsipas at the Australian Open in January.
He now faces Daniil Medvedev, who won this event in 2023. It’s been a resurgent year for Medvedev, as he has won titles in Brisbane and Dubai, while he also impressed at Indian Wells as he defeated Carlos Alcaraz to advance to the final, where he was beaten by Jannik Sinner. However, his recent results have been less impressive, as he failed to win a game against Matteo Berrettini at the Monte-Carlo Masters and he then lost to Flavio Cobolli in the round-of-16 stage of the Madrid Open.
Medvedev leads the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on clay. They last played each other in the third-round of the 2024 French Open, with the Russian prevailing in four sets. He will be the favourite for a third straight win here.
