Tereza Valentova will be hoping to return to winning ways, having lost her last three matches. She qualified for the Qatar Open and then defeated Alexandra Eala in the first-round, before losing to eventual winner Karolina Muchova in the next stage of the tournament. She retired against Kimberley Birrell in qualifying for the Dubai Tennis Championships, and her campaign at Indian Wells ended at the first hurdle after a loss to Donna Vekic. The 19-year-old is still a fine talent and is just inside the top 50 of the world rankings.

She faces Katie Volynets in round one. The American advanced through the qualifying stages. Volynets needed three sets to beat Priscilla Hon, before a more comfortable victory over 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu. Her best result of the season is a semi-final appearance in Ostrava.

Volynets is always competitive on hard courts but it’s worth backing Valentova, who has the higher ceiling.
