THE PREDICTION
World number 63 Zhizhen Zhang took the first set from Dominic Thiem in Austria last week before defeat in the round of 16 but a run to the semi-finals in Hamburg before that was further proof of his improving prowess on clay. The 26-year-old should have all the tools required to transfer some of that form to the hardcourt swing but he was largely overpowered on the surface earlier this season to set up a very tight call here. World number 86 Thanasi Kokkinakis is far better than his current ATP world ranking suggests but the Aussie looks a little bereft of confidence this season, perhaps a hangover from that enthralling five-set battle to 4am in Melbourne when Andy Murray came back from two sets down to stun him. A first meeting between the two looks likely to need a decider here, and taking at least a tiebreak could be the shrewd way to avoid a result altogether, but back Kokkinakis to earn at least a set after coming through qualifying strong this weekend.
