Benfica are flying in this competition. They sit second in the league phase table on nine points heading into Thursday's fixtures, a point behind leaders Olympiacos, with a perfect record from three games and a goal difference of +8 after wins over Milan, Celtic and Omonia. That is the kind of start that all but books a place in the top eight, and the confidence in the squad will be sky high. The domestic picture is just as healthy, with four straight wins in the league and cup, the latest a 1-0 victory over Alverca on Monday, which makes it six in a row in all competitions.
It has been a very different story for Lech Poznan, who sit 32nd on one point ahead of Thursday's fixtures. A 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace was followed by a 4-0 home loss to Bayer Leverkusen, and the 1-1 draw with Sunderland is the only thing keeping them off the bottom. That has not affected their domestic form, with Lech leading the Ekstraklasa after a 3-1 win over Wisla at the weekend, but the gulf in class is likely to show against a side of Benfica's quality.
The bookmakers have Benfica as overwhelming favourites, so the straight win offers little value. Lech have conceded eight goals in their two defeats and Benfica have scored four in two of their three games, so we are backing a comfortable home win with plenty of goals.
