THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Zhizhen Zhang will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 47th after an excellent straight-sets victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime on Thursday. The Chinese number one came back from a set down to avoid an early scare against lucky loser Giulio Zeppieri on Tuesday but he looked eons better against an out-of-sorts Auger-Aliassime to set out his stall as a dark horse for the title here in Marseille. World number 18 Karen Khachanov comfortably beat old foe Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets on Wednesday to look a serious threat to the title too. The Russian, also 27, finally broke his five-year title duck with victory at the Zhuhai Championships last summer and he will be eager to add another sooner rather than later to avoid another weight on his shoulders.
Khachanov enjoyed a run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open before a straight sets defeat to eventual Jannik Sinner, a loss that has aged well, and he remains the favourite in this likely thriller with Zhang on Friday. Back Khachanov to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
TIP: KAREN KHACHANOV TO WIN A SET
