THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Dominic Thiem beat Facundo Bagnis in straight sets on Tuesday but the Austrian continues to stutter on tour. The 29-year-old will be backed to the hilt by a partisan atmosphere this week as he desperately tries to rediscover his former glory on tour but this version of Thiem is a shadow of the one who came back from two sets down to beat Alexander Zverev in the 2020 US Open final. World number 53 Zhizhen Zhang beat Dusan Lajovic in more convincing straight sets on Tuesday to back up an excellent week in Hamburg, where he stunned home hopefuls Yannick Hanfmann and Daniel Altmaier before defeat to eventual runner-up Laslo Djere. Zhang has produced some electrifying tennis on clay courts this summer and if sentimentality is put aside the Chinese number one looks the favourite to come through here. Thiem has failed to win back-to-back matches at tour level since April but home advantage should come to his aid a little here. Take Thiem to earn at least a set or consider the same option in favour of Zhang in what could be the shrewd move.
