THE PREDICTION
This is a hugely unlikely quarter-final between world number 99 Zhizhen Zhang and number 121 Aslan Karatsev with both players responsible for ousting three seeds each from the draw. Former world number 14 Karatsev provided one of the shocks of the round by beating his compatriot Daniil Medvedev in impressive straight sets on Tuesday as he continues to enjoy some resurgent tennis this fortnight. The 29-year-old has endured a woeful last 12 months on tour but there was always the sense that he could return to some previous form of himself as a player who was challenging the very best on tour at his peak in 2021. This is still a really tough draw, though, against the sheer momentum of 26-year-old Zhang who has now thrice come back from a set down to oust seeds in Denis Shapovalov, Cameron Norrie and Taylor Fritz.
The Chinese will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 66th no matter the outcome here but he will believe he can do more after winning the only previous encounter with Karatsev from, again, a set down at the Astana Open late last year. Given Zhang’s record so far, and Karatsev’s ruthless return to form, back the Russian to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance. You could also add a tiebreak in here considering Zhang has already played seven this week and Karatsev two.
