THE PREDICTION
20-year-old Zachary Svajda qualified the hard way to make his third appearance at the US Open after receiving wildcards in 2019 and 2021 and he stunned Marco Cecchinato at this stage of his previous campaign before taking Jannik Sinner to four sets in defeat. The world number 234 is well thought of as a future American star but this looks too steep a test against world number 20 Francisco Cerundolo, who has proved himself on all surfaces this season. The 25-year-old has struggled in recent weeks on hardcourts, with each of his last three matches seeing sets go both ways for a 1-2 record, but a blip in form was to be expected after he failed to defend his Bastad Open title in a tight semi-final defeat last month. Cerundolo beat Tommy Paul to the Eastbourne title in June and he reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros just before that, taking Holger Rune to a 10-7 tiebreak in the fifth. Sets should go both ways here but back Cerundolo to edge through outright inside an accumulator. Otherwise take Svajda to earn at least one on its own.
