World number 106 Jule Niemeier overcame fellow German Ella Seidel in three sets on Monday and she should be better for a choppy opener. The 23-year-old stunned Karolina Muchova in the first round at Wimbledon earlier this month before running out of steam in the second round but she will be eager to build on what looked like improving form after a poor 2023 so far. World number 58 Yulia Putintseva is far better than her current ranking suggests but the Kazakh dropped the ball last week in Budapest, losing to Claire Liu at this stage of the Hungarian Grand Prix as a former champion with a huge chance at going on to take a second title there. The 28-year-old beat Elsa Jacquemot in straight sets on Monday but she is a hard player to back with confidence right now and in fact both players here are highly unpredictable. Niemeier beat Putintseva in straight sets at the US Open last summer in their only previous encounter so back the German to earn at least a set with the benefit of home support to leave the victor up to chance.
