World number 51 Yulia Putintseva is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but consistency is her main foe on tour. The 28-year-old came back from a set down to halt Elina Svitolina’s comeback at the Charleston Open earlier this month but a 6-1, 6-3 defeat to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round does not exactly bode well for her chances here. World number 55 Claire Liu took Bernarda Pera to three sets in Charleston for a reasonable performance on clay and she enjoyed a good run to the third round of the Miami Open last month. Putintseva should better enjoy the conditions in Madrid and she beat the American in straight sets at the Hobart International back in January but this rematch should come closer.
