World number 27 Yoshihito Nishioka has enjoyed the form of his career since last August’s run to the Citi Open final, where he beat four top 40 players before finishing runner-up to Nick Kyrgios. The 27-year-old went on to win a second ATP title at the Korea Open later last season and he brought all that energy through to 2023 with a run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open before running out of steam. A lull threatened to undo the Japanese’s good work but he emulated that run in Melbourne with an impressive campaign at Roland-Garros last month before again capitulating in the round of 16. World number 85 Daniel Elahi Galan takes a four-match losing streak into the first round at Wimbledon but the Colombian has at least been improving his form on the Challenger circuit. Facing Nishioka’s disruptive, trick-laden game for the first time is always a tough task but the 24th seed does come in cold with no grass matches in his legs. Back Nishioka to earn at least two sets as the likelier to come through or risk the outright win.
