World number 57 Yibing Wu passed a significant test on Wednesday with a brilliant comeback over Richard Gasquet giving him a first clay-court win at tour level. The 23-year-old impressed with a superb run to a maiden ATP title at the Dallas Open on a hardcourt back in February and a result like Wednesday’s only increases his stock as an up-and-comer on tour. World number 31 Francisco Cerundolo claimed his maiden ATP title on clay last summer at the Bastad Open and despite an early exit in Madrid two weeks ago he has earned some excellent results over Cam Norrie and Casper Ruud on the surface so far this swing. A first meeting between the two here could well see three sets, particularly as Wu’s confidence will be boosted, but back the more experienced Cerundolo to win outright.
