World number 101 Yannick Hanfmann is always a tough draw on his favoured clay and he is yet to drop a set this week in Rome from qualifying through to an impressive win over Nicolas Jarry on Thursday. The 31-year-old upset Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets at this stage of the Madrid Open two weeks ago but this looks a considerably tougher challenge against world number nine Taylor Fritz. 25-year-old Fritz is one of the most well-balanced all-courters on tour, with recent wins against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem on clay to prove it, but he will be eager to make a fast start here after falling to the surprise run of Zhizhen Zhang in Madrid last week. There has been at least one tiebreak in each of the American’s last four matches on clay and that looks a suitable alternative to siding with a winner here, although Fritz should be coming through outright. Hanfmann saw a tiebreak in two of his three matches in Madrid.
