THE PREDICTION
World number nine Taylor Fritz reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time here last summer, coming perilously close to beating Rafael Nadal in a five-set slog that saw the Spaniard have to withdraw injured from the semi-finals soon after. The 25-year-old won his fifth ATP title at the Delray Beach Open back in February but two of his five have come on grass at the Eastbourne International in 2019 and last season. Fritz looks to be struggling for form coming into Wimbledon, though, with three early exits on grass this month in Stuttgart, Queen’s and as defending champion in Eastbourne.
Meanwhile, 31-year-old Yannick Hanfmann is enjoying the best form of his career and he will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 44th after a strong run to the semi-finals of the Mallorca Championships this week. The German stunned Fritz in comfortable straight sets on his favoured clay at the Italian Open last month, en-route to a career-best run to the quarter-finals there, and he upset defending Mallorca champion Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday to look a serious threat. Fritz’ chances at a good run here totally depend on how he comes out on Monday but consider taking Hanfmann to earn at least a set to leave this potential upset up to chance.
