THE PREDICTION
World number three Daniil Medvedev beat Alexander Zverev in straight sets for the first time this season after overcoming the German from a set down on two occasions already in 2023. The 27-year-old has won more matches (36) on tour than any other player this season and he is playing exceptionally well so far on his weakest surface to take the lead in the Race to Turin. 31-year-old Yannick Hanfmann is a creditable threat here, though, after the German grabbed a career-best result on Tuesday in a three-set upset of world number six Andrey Rublev. Hanfmann will set a new career-high ATP world ranking after excellent form on his favoured clay in recent weeks, including another top 10 win over Taylor Fritz in the first round here in Rome and an excellent result over Lorenzo Musetti in Madrid two weeks ago.
A first meeting between the two sees Hanfmann with nothing to lose in a first ATP Masters quarter-final and he is well capable of an upset on the biggest day of his long career against Medvedev who, despite his high level, can be caught out on this surface. The shrewd move is possibly taking Hanfmann to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance whilst the sensible concession is taking Medvedev to do the same.
