THE PREDICTION

This should be a quality clash on Wednesday between two players who enjoyed transformative clay swings. 31-year-old Yannick Hanfmann finally broke the top 50 on tour after a huge run to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open in May, where he stunned Taylor Fritz for the first time this summer before improving with a victory over world number six Andrey Rublev. Hanfmann went one better in Mallorca on grass to stun defending champion and world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas before taking Fritz to five sets in the first round at Wimbledon. World number 64 Daniel Altmaier has struggled on grass since his excellent few weeks on clay, culminating in an incredible five-set victory over Jannik Sinner at Roland-Garros, but a comfortable win on Monday suggests he is pleased to be back on his favoured surface. Altmaier beat Hanfmann in the third round at the Madrid Open in May just as he was coming into peak but Hanfmann has much more momentum in this rematch. Three sets seem likelier than two so consider taking Hanfmann to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors or risk the three set option.
