THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Madison Keys finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens here in 2017 and she made the semi-finals the following season, although she has failed to make it to the second week in each of her last three appearances. After a few years of middling form the American reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open for a second time in 2022 to suggest more success was on the horizon and she has added two more WTA titles to her career total of seven since the start of 2022, including an excellent Eastbourne 500 campaign in June. Former world number 12 Yanina Wickmayer came through qualifying as a lucky loser, particularly lucky considering she retired injured in the third round of qualifying, before beating fellow veteran Vera Zvonareva in straight sets on Tuesday. The current world number 85 has worked hard to pull herself back inside the top 100 this season but this first meeting with Keys looks several steps too steep. Keys beat in-form Arantxa Rus in straight sets on Tuesday and she can do the same to Wickmayer here, backed hard by an adoring home crowd.
