World number 78 Yafan Wang broke inside the top 50 last summer after an incredible spell on the ITF circuit and she looks well capable of returning to that peak over the coming weeks after an excellent start to 2024. The 29-year-old is yet to drop a set this week to build on an excellent Australian Open campaign that saw upsets over Sorana Cirstea and Emma Raducanu but next opponent Katie Volynets is no pushover, proving so with a strong comeback over fourth seed Tatjana Maria on Thursday. The 22-year-old claimed six of a remarkable 20 break points against Maria’s serve to look hungry for more here in Hua Hin and this should be a real scrap with renowned grafter Wang. The Chinese will receive the lion’s share of the support here and her current form suggests she can make the semi-finals but taking Wang to earn at least a set is the suitably cautious call in this first encounter.
