THE PREDICTION

29-year-old Yafan Wang has been in scintillating form on the ITF circuit this season to bring some serious momentum into the US Open, blasting through qualifying before stunning an out-of-sorts Caroline Garcia on Tuesday. Whilst Garcia’s mind was elsewhere with the sad passing of her grandmother on the day this match looked like an upset already given Wang’s fierce rise back up the rankings and she stands an excellent chance at reaching the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time via this first encounter with Katie Boulter. 27-year-old Boulter will break the top 60 on tour for the first time after easing past Diane Parry on Tuesday to claim her first win at the US Open, although she has enjoyed better success at Wimbledon with successive third round exits. The Brit won her maiden WTA title at the Nottingham Open on grass in June but she has all of the tools required to excel in these conditions too. Yafan Wang will go from underdog to slight favourite on form here and that could be a struggle to contend with but back the Chinese to edge through on her searing momentum.
