THE PREDICTION

World number 168 Taylor Townsend grabbed the best result of her career on Thursday with a thrilling three-set victory over world number three Jessica Pegula. 27-year-old Townsend set a career-high WTA world ranking of 61st back in 2018 and she is capable of a level even higher than that on her day, with her current deflated ranking due to a long absence through maternity leave between late 2020 and early 2022. World number 75 Xiyu Wang also provided one of many shocks in a thrilling second round on the WTA side of the draw in Rome when she ousted 31st seed Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets. The 22-year-old is an excellent scrapper on clay and through to the third round of a Masters tournament for the second-successive time after stunning Bianca Andreescu in Madrid two weeks ago. The pair have a win apiece below tour level but this first encounter on tour feels totally wide open. It would be easy to suggest that Townsend is the favourite after ousting the third seed but Wang has the more consistent results on clay which makes taking her to win at least a set seem the sensible way to avoid picking a winner altogether.
