World number 73 Bernarda Pera became the latest player to stun Veronika Kudermetova with an impressive straight-sets win on Monday. The 28-year-old won back-to-back WTA titles on her favoured clay last summer to set a career-high world ranking of 27th earlier this season but failing to defend them both in July looked to seriously affect the rest of her 2023 until Monday’s big win. World number 95 Xiyu Wang is a player capable of much tennis than her current ranking suggests, particularly on hardcourts, but she survived an early scare on Monday with a comeback over lucky loser Viktoria Hruncakova. The Chinese beat Pera as a teenager five years ago in Wuhan but bot players have improved significantly since then. This is a really tough call given Pera’s opener but back Wang to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier to come through in these conditions.
