THE PREDICTION
21-year-old Xinyu Wang came into the Japan Women’s Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 39th after a breakthrough run to the round of 16 at the US Open proved what she can do on a hardcourt. The Chinese up-and-comer took Karolina Muchova to three sets before defeat in New York and she is yet to drop a set in Osaka to look the dark horse for title. World number 88 Yulia Putintseva has conceded just eight games on her way to the quarter-finals but the Kazakh will face her toughest foe yet here. The 28-year-old is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but she is at her best on clay with very little recent form in these conditions to make a strong case. A first meeting between the two is well worth leaving out of an accumulator but back Wang to maintain her strong momentum to reach the semi-finals.
