22-year-old Xinyu Wang came into the Hong Kong Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 32nd after bursting into form on the late hardcourt swing. The Chinese number two reached the round of 16 in Beijing last week before a close-run defeat to Maria Sakkari in three sets but her best run to date was a round of 16 exit at the US Open, also in three sets, to eventual semi-finalist Karolina Muchova. Wang beat Sara Sorribes Tormo from a set down in the second round of New York to look the favourite here but Sorribes Tormo has since won her second WTA title at the Cleveland Championships to complete her long road back from injury. The Spaniard, who also reached a career-high of 32nd at her peak, conceded just one game to home hopeful Wu Ho-ching on Wednesday and she brings a winning mentality into this clash after claiming the Women’s Doubles title alongside Marie Bouzkova in Beijing last weekend. Back Wang to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of two very capable victors.
