Daniil Medvedev advanced to his sixth semi-final on the ATP Tour this season after a three set win over Coleman Wong. The former world number one took the lead after the first set, but Wong extended the contest after dominating the tiebreak in the second. Medvedev regrouped and crucially broke his opponent’s serve in the eighth game before serving it out to win 6-3 6-7 (2) 6-3. He is seeking a third title of the campaign.
He will now play Roman Safiullin. The Russian was in control of his quarter-final match, beating Yunchaokete Bu in straight sets. He struck 15 aces, won 88% of his first serve points and did not concede a break point opportunity as he easily won 6-3 6-3 after one hour and nine minutes. This is his best tour-level result of the season, and he is up to 84 in the live rankings.
Safiullin’s explosive power could trouble Medvedev at times, but the 2021 US Open champion is still an impressive defensive player, and he should be able to draw enough errors from his compatriot.
