Rafael Jodar marked his Laver Cup debut with a singles win over Alexander Bublik on day one. The 20-year-old dominated the encounter; breaking Bublik’s serve on four occasions and going on to win 6-2 6-3. This was his first match back since his surprise loss to Yunchaokete Bu at the US Open. Nevertheless, this has been a stunning breakthrough season for the Spaniard, as he has surged up the rankings, winning a tour-level title for the first time in Marrakesh and advancing to a first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros.

He will face Taylor Fritz. The American missed out on a second straight win over Carlos Alcaraz at the Laver Cup, with the seven-time Grand Slam champion saving two match points and beating Fritz in a dramatic deciding tiebreak. He also lost out to Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik in the doubles a day earlier, alongside Bublik.

Fritz leads the head-to-head 2-0 after a couple of wins earlier in the season. They faced each other at the Washington Open final right at the start of last month, with the 2024 US Open finalist prevailing in straight sets. Fritz performed strongly against Alcaraz despite the defeat, and he will cause Jodar plenty of problems if he maintains the same aggressive approach.
