THE PREDICTION

World number 42 Xinyu Wang really found her feet on the late hardcourt swing last season, with a superb run to the round of 16 at the US Open complemented by strong campaigns in Cleveland, Osaka and Beijing. The 22-year-old has fallen away from that peak level in more recent months but a run to the semi-finals of the Hua Hin Championships and a recent victory over Beatriz Haddad-Maia is proof that more form is just around the corner, although she had better make hay quickly before the end of the hardcourt swing. World number 69 Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova will be eagerly awaiting April’s shift to the clay swing after reaching the last 16 at Roland-Garros last summer but she is an effective competitor on all surfaces. The Slovak reached the semi-finals of the Austin Open last week to bring solid form into Indian Wells but Wang should be able to overcome her opponent here, just as she did in straight sets to reach the last 16 in New York last summer.

TIP: XINYU WANG TO WIN
