World number 77 Tamara Korpatsch has never lost to number 73 Viktoriya Tomova in six previous matches, including their only tour-level encounter at the Prague Open last summer. The 28-year-old enjoyed a strong end to 2023 to pick up her maiden WTA title at the Transylvanian Open in October but she has managed just one win since to suggest this could finally her Bulgarian opponent’s day. 29-year-old Tomova beat Sofia Kenin in straight sets two weeks ago at Indian Wells, before an impressive three-set exit to Caroline Garcia, and she began 2024 well with a rare quarter-final reached at the Hobart International. Korpatsch will be a dangerous foe on the second wind of a lucky loser here, however, and her record makes taking the German to earn at least a set look the most sensible way to avoid a result.
