THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Viktoriya Tomova will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 70th after coming back from a set down to oust Alize Cornet on Monday. The Bulgarian won an ITF event on clay in Spain last month and despite suffering early exits on tour in recent tournaments she has looked to be improving on her favoured surface. World number 58 Lauren Davis is also in her element on clay and she handed Sarah Iliev a second-set bagel to coast through her first round match on Monday. The 29-year-old claimed the second WTA title of her career at the Hobart International back in January but she has since struggled with injuries, with Monday’s win also snapping a three-match losing streak on tour. Davis beat Tomova in three sets only recently at another Spanish Challenger earlier this month but all three of their encounters on and off the tour have needed a decider, so back Davis to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
