THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova stunned Veronika Kudermetova at this stage of Roland-Garros earlier this summer in a surprise run to the round of 16 before defeat to Coco Gauff. The Slovak moved back up to world number 77 for her efforts but she has been ranked inside the top 30 before on tour with three WTA titles to her name. This looks a wide open first round clash with world number 129 Viktorija Golubic, who has endured a woeful past two seasons on tour. The Swiss reached the quarter-finals here at her peak back in 2021 and she is at her best on grass, with a recent victory over Donna Vekic at the Nottingham Open proof of what she can do, but the confidence is still not there. Schmiedlova has not won a match since Paris to come in very cold whilst Golubic qualified well last week to take a full month on grass into the contest so back the Swiss to earn at least a set as the likelier of the two to come through.
