World number 36 Sloane Stephens won the 2017 US Open at her peak but the American has always looked most at home on clay, on which she finished runner-up to Simona Halep at Roland-Garros in 2018. The 30-year-old’s erratic form makes predicting how she will fare from day to day tricky, let alone tournament to tournament, but a Challenger title won last weekend looks to have given her some confidence coming into Rome, where she beat Nadia Podoroska in straight sets on Wednesday. World number 17 Victoria Azarenka suffered an early exit to Alycia Parks at this stage of the Madrid Open two weeks ago but she stayed on to produce a stunning run to the Women’s Doubles title alongside Beatriz Haddad-Maia. The Belarussian only just beat Stephens in three sets at the Charleston Open last month to level their head-to-head at 4-4, with a win apiece on clay, but Stephens should be feeling in much better shape for this rematch. Leave any match featuring the American out of an accumulator but consider taking Stephens to earn at least a set here, as she has done in each of their last five meetings.
