THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka conceded just three games to Fiona Ferro on Monday to make a statement of intent at the US Open, where she finished runner-up to Naomi Osaka as recently as three years ago. The 34-year-old old won back-to-back Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 and she enjoyed a run to the semi-finals in Melbourne back in January, where she came back from a set down to end the best run of Lin Zhu’s career in the round of 16. World number 44 Lin Zhu went on to win her maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships to capitalise on that early hardcourt form and she looks strong on the surface this month, with a run to the semi-finals in Cleveland last week seeing two eye-catching results over Caroline Garcia and Anna Blinkova. The Chinese beat Mayar Sherif in impressive straight sets on Monday but Azarenka should be winning this match in straight sets at her best. There is more than a hint of an upset about this rematch between the two, so take the Belarussian to edge through outright or consider a one-off option on the match to need a decider once again.
