Former world number one Victoria Azarenka looked assured in a straight-sets victory over Daria Kasatkina in a surprising result against the 11th seed. World number 20 Azarenka survived an early scare in three sets over Yue Yuan on Monday to look vulnerable at Wimbledon but she is just one win away from returning to the last eight for the first time since 2015, with back-to-back semi-final exits in 2011 and 2012 her best runs here. 33-year-old Azarenka won both of her Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 but she thrice been a US Open runner-up, most recently to Naomi Osaka in 2020.
ELINA SVITOLINA
Former world number three Elina Svitolina is playing excellent tennis reminiscent of her best years on tour right now in a remarkable resurgence from her recent maternity leave. The 28-year-old beat an impressive Sofia Kenin in straight sets on Friday to back-up strong results over Venus Williams and Elise Mertens so far and she is one win away from emulating her remarkable run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros last month, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka. Svitolina reached the semi-finals here in 2019 and later matched that career-best run at the US Open, with nine runs to the quarter-finals or higher at major tournaments so far.
THE PREDICTION
This could be the match of the day on Sunday if both players bring their best level to a highly unlikely round of 16 fixture. It is surprising to find that Victoria Azarenka leads Elina Svitolina 5-0 in their head-to-head record, most recently basting past the Ukrainian in straight sets at the Australian Open last season, but a first meeting on grass levels the playing field a little. It is hard to look past the political here, with Svitolina hugely motivated to beat the Belarussian for her war-torn nation on tennis’, and indeed one of sport’s, biggest stages.
