World number 12 Veronika Kudermetova reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Open two weeks ago before defeat to world number one Iga Swiatek and she looks like needing the same sort of force to oust her in Rome. A three-set victory over in-form Anastasia Potapova on Saturday is her best result of the campaign so far but her straight-sets win over Marie Bouzkova on Monday is perhaps her most impressive after too many three-set scraps in recent weeks. 21-year-old rising star Qinwen Zheng will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 18th after overcoming fellow compatriot Xiyu Wang in three sets on Monday. The Chinese has enjoyed a relatively kind draw so far but she should not be underestimated in these conditions with some very serious results on clay so far in her young career. Zheng beat Kudermetova in three sets to reach the Tokyo Open final last September and three sets would not be a surprise here. Consider the three-set option on its own or back in-form Kudermetova to earn at least a set inside an accumulator to leave the victor up to chance.
