THE PREDICTION
World number 12 Veronika Kudermetova should enjoy a strong run here at Wimbledon based on her excellent recent form and yet the Russian is probably not a contender overall. The 26-year-old finished runner-up to compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Libema Open on grass last month and then upset Aryna Sabalenka at the Berlin Open a week over before pulling out o the quarter-finals with what looked to be a precautionary move. Kudermetova also reached back-to-back Masters semi-finals on clay in Madrid and Rome but she has struggled at Grand Slams so far this year, losing in the second round in Melbourne and suffering an upset in the first at Roland-Garros. Former world number 15 Kaia Kanepi is a renowned giant-killer at this level and despite a poor season so far the Estonian was certainly one of the draws to avoid here.
However, the 38-year-old has lost four of her six first round matches at Wimbledon since making the quarter-finals in 2013 and in each of her first two majors this season to suggest Kudermetova can avoid a banana skin. Back Kudermetova to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
