THE PREDICTION

World number three Coco Gauff made it 14 wins on the spin on Tuesday but it was a tough task against Petra Martic, who dragged the US Open champion all the way to a deciding tiebreak. 19-year-old Gauff won her first Masters title in Cincinnati in August, sandwiched in between a first WTA 500 in Washington and her maiden Grand Slam title last month, and she looks a serious threat to the China Open after beating new world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open final. World number 16 Veronika Kudermetova brings a winning streak of her own, though, after winning her second WTA title at the Tokyo Open on Sunday. The 26-year-old stunned Iga Swiatek in Tokyo before a complete performance against Jessica Pegula in the final and she did well to recover from an early scare against Lesia Tsurenko in her opener here in Beijing on Tuesday. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record after two tight three-setters this season, with Kudermetova winning in Doha and Gauff avenging in Stuttgart, so take Gauff to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors or risk the three-set option.
