THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Anhelina Kalinina came into the Italian Open at world number 47th and in desperate need of a strong campaign after initially struggling to impose herself on tournaments this season. The 26-year-old has gone above and beyond this fortnight to reach the semi-finals of a Masters event for the first time, with two impressive comeback wins over Madison Keys and Beatriz Haddad-Maia seeing her move back up to a career-high 28th in the live WTA world rankings. World number 12 Veronika Kudermetova has made back-to-back semi-finals at Masters level for the first time in her career after a comeback of her own over Qinwen Zheng on Tuesday. The 26-year-old has also beaten the likes of Anastasia Potapova, Daria Kasatkina and Jessica Pegula across Madrid and Rome to look a sudden contender at Roland-Garros after starting the season relatively slowly.
The pair share a finely-poised head-to-head record at 1-1 after Kalinina overcame the Russian in three sets at the Dubai Masters in February but both of their meetings have needed a decider. This first on clay better-suits Kalinina in terms of conditions and whilst it could as easily be an unwanted extra pressure there will probably an extra ounce of motivation for the Ukrainian against a Russian opponent with the world watching. The reasonable risk is backing Kalinina to earn at least a set and the more sensible concession is taking the same option for Kudermetova, although in that case the three-set option could be the shrewd move here.
