THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Venus Williams has looked competitive in her recent defeats to Elina Svitolina and Madison Keys on tour to suggest that she is playing at a level well inside the top 100. At 43 years old, though, fitness and recovery are the American’s bigger foes and she has been handed a very tough draw here in Cincinnati – one of the few US tournaments she does not count amongst her 49 WTA titles. World number 16 Veronika Kudermetova has enjoyed some of the best tennis of her career this season but the Russian has not played since a second round defeat to eventual champion Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon after struggling with injuries on the grass swing. Williams and Kudermetova have never met on tour and there is the slightest scent of a potential upset here with a partisan crowd ready to bolster the American’s resolve. Kudermetova should be able to win this match in straight sets but taking Williams to earn at least one could be the shrewd move outside of an accumulator.
