Former world number one Venus Williams overcame Camila Giorgi in a three-hour marathon match on Monday to grab her most impressive result since defeating Victoria Azarenka at the Lexington Open in 2020. The 43-year-old has already earned her wildcard into Wimbledon in two weeks’ time as a five-time former champion but she will be ecstatic to have been competitive here in Birmingham after an impressive first set in her defeat to Celine Naef at the Libema Open last week. This round of 16 clash with Jelena Ostapenko should be far too steep of a challenge against one of the better grass-courters on tour but the Birmingham crowd will do everything in their power to support Williams, who leads the Latvian 2-0 in their head-to-head – including in the quarter-final of Wimbledon back in 2017. World number 17 Ostapenko needed three sets to oust Linda Noskova on Tuesday but she should have little trouble coming through this match in straight sets against Williams, whose biggest foe will likely be fatigue.
