THE PREDICTION
Five-time former Wimbledon champion Venus Williams will take on former world number three Elina Svitolina in what should be a huge draw for crowds on Monday. 41-year-old Williams last won here in 2008 with victory over her sister Serena but she was, remarkably, a finalist for the ninth time here as recently as 2017 before finishing runner-up to Garbine Muguruza. The former world number one beat Camila Giorgi in a three-set thriller at the Birmingham Classic last week to earn a wildcard to the main draw here and she will be well-backed as one of the all-time greats against Svitolina, who will also be warmly received after her own return to tour. The current world number 75 made great strides towards repairing her ranking with an excellent run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros but she looked well off the pace in her first match since, winning just two games against Linda Fruhvirtova in a defeat in Birmingham last week. The Ukrainian reached the semi-finals here at her peak in 2019 but grass conditions certainly better-suit her opponent. Leave this match well away from an accumulator but otherwise consider taking Williams to roll back the years one more time with a tight win.
