THE PREDICTION
World number 46 Varvara Gracheva has struggled since making the switch to clay from hardcourts but the Russian was in the form of her career not long ago, losing in back-to-back round of 16s on the Sunshine Double to eventual champions Elena Rybakina and Petra Kvitova. The 22-year-old has so far proven to be an excellent all-courter with back-to-back third rounds made at Roland-Garros in the past two seasons but world number 100 Camila Osorio is a huge outlier in these conditions at her current ranking as a top clay-court competitor. The former world number 33 reached the third round of the Madrid Open two weeks ago and challenged eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka throughout a straight-sets defeat after upsetting Marta Kostyuk in three sets. A strong qualifying run gives her some momentum in Rome, where she will be backed by however much of a crowd is present, and taking her to earn at least a set from this first meeting with Gracheva looks the shrewd way to avoid a result.
