THE PREDICTION
World number 171 Valeria Savinykh has enjoyed some strong results on the ITF circuit this season but a three-set victory over Anna-Lena Friedsam still came as a shock on Monday. The Russian set a career-high WTA world ranking of 99th way back in 2012 but she has spent much of the past few seasons well off the main tour. World number 88 Yulia Putintseva is far better than her current deflated ranking suggests but the Kazakh has endured a tough year so far, occasionally causing a stir before falling away again. The 28-year-old won her second WTA title in Budapest this time two hears ago and she should be a constant threat at a tournament of that size, like here in Osaka. A comfortable win over Diana Shnaider in the first round is encouraging but Putintseva so often starts strong before capitulating. Savinykh has nothing to lose here with some serious momentum behind her from qualifying but this is definitely a match best kept from an accumulator. Otherwise, take the Russian to snatch at least a set.
