THE PREDICTION
It seems likely that this tie may be a dead rubber with Jessica Pegula the clear favourite over Ajla Tomljanovic in the women’s match and Taylor Fritz the slighter against Alex de Minaur. However, should this tie be level at 1-1 in time for the doubles we could be in for the decider of the week so far here in Perth. Pegula and Fritz, surprisingly playing ahead of doubles number six Rajeev Ram, came back from a set down against Great Britain to snatch the tie 10-7 in the tiebreak and that momentum should see the defending champions in greater spirit on Monday. Australia can count on a seasoned, specialist duo in doubles number one Storm Hunter and number four Matthew Ebden but their victory over Great Britain on Friday was in dead rubber circumstances.
It may be that Ram comes in for Fritz to see four committed doubles players on the court, with Pegula currently ranked higher in the format (third) than in singles, but a live match at this stage of the tie would certainly favour the hosts in front of a partisan crowd. It is certainly worth waiting for the singles results but back Australia to earn at least a set if they have a chance at victory here.
